How to Add Hair to a Thin Wig

Were you a bit rough when brushing or combing your wig? Did you receive a unit that was a bit thin to begin with? Or would you just like to add volume to your hair for the weekend and/or special occasions? Regardless of why you want to add more hair, here are 4 easy steps to make that happen.

Tools:

Brush

Wide tooth comb

Scissors

Hair clips

Weaving thread

Weaving needle

Weft hair that matches your wig

Step 1: Measure 2 wefts to ensure they are the same length as the track on your wig. Cut if necessary.

Step 2: Using your weaving thread and weaving needle which you can purchase at any local beauty supply store, sew the ends of the two wefts together.

Step 3: Sew your hair clips along the two tracks you’ve stitched together. Make sure the needle goes through both wefts when sewing on the clips.

Step 4: Clip the hair onto your lace wig tracks for added volume. Finger comb, brush or use a wide tooth comb to ensure the hair blended in nicely.

How to Add Moisture to a Dry Wig

Because human hair on wigs is no longer attached at the root to a scalp, over time, the hair will come to desperately need moisture and lubricating oil. Most wigs have a silicon coating but after the wig has been styled, worn and washed a number of times – that coating will come off and you may notice that the feel of the hair was changed. Treat your hair to monthly hot oil and conditioning treatments to preserve the overall feel of the hair.

Tools:

Argan or jojoba oil

Deep conditioner

Plastic hair cap

Towel

Wide tooth comb

Step 1: Treat your hair to a hot oil treatment. Wet the hair and heat a cup of water and place your small bottle of oil inside. Pour the oil on the hair, beginning at the ends and comb the oil throughout with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Once the hair is saturated, cover it with a plastic hair cap and wrap it in a towel.

Step 2: Allow the hair to soak up the oil for at least 30 minutes or longer if time permits.

Step 3: Rinse and apply conditioner the same way you applied the oil. Allow the conditioner to set on the hair for at least 10 minutes.

Step 4: Rinse the conditioner out with cool or cold water and air dry.

How to Repair an Unraveling Cap

If the stitching inside your wig cap has come apart leaving a track hanging or the thread unraveling this can be a simple fix.

Tools:

Sewing needle

Thread that matches the color of your wig

Clear wig adhesive

Step 1: If you aren’t handy with a needle and thread, you can apply a wig adhesive to any areas that have come undone. Apply a thin layer of glue and press the track, lace or any area that has come apart for 10 seconds. The glue will need to thoroughly dry before you style or wear the hair.

Step 2: If you are not afraid of light sewing, stitch any tracks or unraveling lace and thread back together. It doesn’t have to be a perfectly sewn line; you can create a stitch in sections after you thread the needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread.

In total, if you need to apply all 3 of these fixes, you’re looking at a couple of hours of your time that you could reserve on a lazy Sunday. Afterwards, you can try some of these simple yet gorgeous styling options in preparation for the upcoming week. Let us know if the comments below what you thought of this week’s blog!
